Florida runs one of America's busiest ticket economies for a simple reason: an enormous share of the cars on its best roads are driven by people who don't know its roads. If you're driving to the parks, the beaches, or the Keys, you are the business model.
The point clock
Florida's system counts points on rolling windows, and the commonly cited thresholds escalate quickly: enough points inside 12 months brings a 30-day suspension, more inside 18 months brings longer, and so on up the ladder. Speeding convictions carry three or four points depending on severity — meaning two or three tickets inside a year can silence your license. Out-of-state drivers: Florida reports convictions home through interstate compacts; the points typically follow you.
Where it happens
- The Turnpike and I-4 — dense enforcement on the exact corridors every visitor drives, with construction zones (doubled fines when workers present) rolling for years at a time.
- US-1 through the Keys — a two-lane parade of 45/35/25 transitions through small municipalities, each with local enforcement.
- Beach-town mainland approaches — causeway speed into a 30 zone with a motor officer at the base of the bridge.
- School zones — Florida treats them severely, and many now carry automated speed cameras. The time-of-day limits are exactly the kind of data a paper map — or your memory — doesn't hold.
The rental-car problem
Rental drivers get the worst of every mechanism: unfamiliar roads, no local knowledge of zone geometry, camera citations mailed through the rental company with service fees stacked on top. And a Florida conviction still lands on your home-state record and your insurance.
Driving Florida like a local
Locals aren't slower — they just know where the zones change. That knowledge is now downloadable: a route-ahead voice announcing the next two zones makes the Overseas Highway's rhythm — and the Turnpike's construction drops — something you hear coming instead of discover in the mirror.
